    Toni Johnson
    Conductor, KCS

    As a conductor, so many people depend on us. We worked through Covid. People still needed to get to work. I safely pulled the train every day and I made sure everyone with me was safe.

    A large part of the job is customer service. We deal with hundreds of thousands of people. You interact with everyone on the train. It can be challenging, but we take care of ourselves first so we can deliver excellent customer service.

    I get bored easily, but on the railroad, there is so much to do. I’m never bored. We build great relationships with our passengers. It’s an intimate job. And, of all my previous jobs, this is my career. I always have something to talk about at home. I have great stories!

    QMP Inspector Carmen, KCS

    I’ve been with Keolis since they started here in Boston. My day-to-day job is to inspect and repair the trains daily. Carmen are the backbone of the commuter rail. We make sure all defects are faced head-on so the trains are safe and reliable. I’m also the Executive VP for the Transport Workers Union Local 2054, the co-chair of the mechanical safety committee, and I sit on the employee engagement committee.

    We have a very diverse work environment with people from all over the world. What brings a smile to my face every day is the big handshake and hug I get from my buddy, the #1 coach cleaner, Matthew Lebrecque.

    I started off here at a young age and have been here for almost half my life. For me, this is not just a job but a career. The railroad has been good to me and I’ve made many lifelong friends. I love how everyone here steps up and gives 110% daily.

    I began my journey with Keolis in 2015 as a customer service agent. In 2017, I was the interim supervisor for our passenger assistants and was promoted to Customer Service Center Supervisor later that year. I’ve been in my current role as Manager of DEI since October 2022.

    What is most meaningful about my work? It’s having the opportunity to be a voice and advocate for underrepresented employees and marginalized groups in the communities we serve. Bringing awareness to issues surrounding discriminatory behaviors and harassment, while also ensuring accountability, is very important to me as well.


    At Keolis, I have really enjoyed the great working relationships I’ve developed over the years and the fact that there is always something new to learn and experience.

    Ignacio Barillas
    Locomotive Engineer, KCS

    From the day I started as an assistant conductor, my goal was to become a locomotive engineer. I applied three times, interviewed twice, and was hired as a locomotive engineer trainee on March 1, 2023. After two months of classroom training and six and half months of on-the-job training, I was certified as a Class 1 Locomotive Engineer.

    There’s a tremendous amount of knowledge that comes with the role. It isn’t as simple as making a train move. The locomotive engineer has to make split decisions at times, and they have to react according to their knowledge of the operating rules. Applying the rules keeps everyone safe and the train moving.

    Being able to help thousands of people get to where they need to be every day means the most to me. Owning a vehicle is a luxury in life that not everyone can afford. As someone who used to rely on public transportation, I understand that it’s vital for a lot of people.
